Is your problem….

Room or rooms that are too hot in the summer? Rooms that are too hot in the summer is a fairly common problem, especially in 2-story homes. The cause of the problem is that the room or rooms are gaining heat more quickly than the air conditioning system removes it. Often the area that is too warm would be a lot more comfortable if the air conditioning system delivered more cool, dry air.
Sometimes getting more cool air delivered is relatively simple – adjusting some volume dampers in the ductwork. Often, however there is more to it than that. Ductwork installations are often a big part of the problem. Ductwork that is improperly sized, installed wrong, or has leaks can be fixed. The U. S. EPA has estimated that the average home loses 20% of cooling and heating energy to duct leaks.
2-story homes frequently suffer from “too warm on the second floor”. The upstairs gains a lot of heat from the attic, the downstairs does not. The thermostat is located on the first floor. When the first floor reaches the thermostat setting, the air conditioning system shuts off. The best way to solve this problem is with zoning. Zoning is accomplished by adding a thermostat to each area of the home or office that needs one. The thermostats connect to a zone panel that controls dampers in the ductwork. So when the second floor “calls for cooling” at the thermostat, the system can deliver the cool, dry air until the thermostat is satisfied.

Rooms that are too cold in the winter? Rooms that are too cold in the winter can have a couple of causes. By far the most common is poor airflow, which is often a result of ductwork problems. If the ductwork won’t allow the delivery of the right amount of air to keep a room warm, the answer could be reworking the ductwork to correct the deficiencies, and in some cases, zoning.  Ductwork that is improperly sized, installed wrong, or has leaks can be fixed. The U. S. EPA has estimated that the average home loses 20% of cooling and heating energy to duct leaks.
